In April 2026, a TPU compounding company sent 25 kg of incoming material to our test site. The material was Wanhua Chemical thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) regrind — irregular flakes with visibly high levels of dust and fine particles. After a run through an RC1 test unit (capacity 150–350 kg/h), the dedusted sample showed essentially no fine dust or fine particles to the eye, and the collected dust accounted for roughly 10% of the sample volume.
The case illustrates a common misunderstanding: many plants assume that "dedusting" means filtering dust out of the conveying air. What actually determines product cleanliness is the fine powder, chips and angel hair adhering to the pellet surface. A DeDuster treats exactly that — it is a material cleaning device, not a dust collector.
Shanghai Conque Engineering Technology Co., Ltd. supplies the DeDuster series, covering models XD-20 to XD-90 with capacities from 10 kg/h to 150 t/h. The units can be integrated with dilute-phase, dense-phase and strand-phase pneumatic conveying systems. This article covers the working principle, five selection checkpoints, a model comparison, the TPU test, installation positions and maintenance intervals, so that process and equipment engineers can reference it directly during selection and tendering.
This is the most frequently asked question, and the two are often confused:
During high-speed conveying, pellets rub against each other and collide with the pipe wall, generating fines and angel hair; a significant part of it sticks to pellet surfaces through static electricity. Conventional cyclones or bag filters target dust entrained in the air stream and cannot remove powder that is attached to the pellet surface. Because they serve different targets, the two are normally used together in a complete conveying system: the dust collector keeps the exhaust air clean, and the deduster keeps the product clean.
Charged particles entering the magnetic zone of the deduster are subjected to Lorentz forces that weaken the electrostatic adhesion between pellets and fines. A clean, positive-pressure purge air stream then carries the detached fine dust and angel hair away. The unit uses narrow slots and perforated plates, giving high angel-hair removal efficiency, and is designed to be insensitive to fluctuations in material flow — important in real plants, where upstream feed variation is the norm.
For materials with exceptionally strong surface static (some PP, PE and TPU pellets), fines are harder to entrain. Ionized air can be used upstream to neutralize the charge before the material enters the deduster. TPU adds another complication: it is hygroscopic. If ambient air is used for purging, the unit removes dust and humidifies the material at the same time. In that case, a closed-loop or dried-air supply is not an optional extra but part of the process requirement.
The actual dedusting efficiency of the same unit can vary widely between duties. Confirming the following five points one by one avoids most disputes after commissioning:
1) Capacity range. Calculate the steady-state and peak throughput separately; do not size on the average. XD-20 to XD-90 cover 10 kg/h to 150 t/h. The peak duty must fall within the selected model's capacity with margin.
2) Target fines content. Specify both the inlet fines content and the allowable outlet fines content. These two figures determine the number of dedusting stages and whether multi-stage series operation is required. In polymerization plants, for example, PP and PE pellets are often required to be controlled to the 15 ppm level, and EVA applications are stricter. If the inlet fines content is significantly above the design value, adjusting air volume alone will not meet the target.
3) Air supply. Dedusting requires a stable positive-pressure air stream. Air volume, pressure and whether nitrogen is used must be confirmed before ordering; fluctuations in the air supply translate directly into fluctuations in dedusting efficiency. For hygroscopic materials, also confirm whether closed-loop operation is required and whether the air dew point is controlled.
4) Installation position. Silo inlet, before truck loading or bagging, and the end of the conveying line impose different space and pressure-loss conditions, and different requirements on inlet/outlet orientation and maintenance access. The position must be fixed at the layout stage.
5) Upstream and downstream matching. The feed stability of the upstream rotary valve and the back pressure of the downstream dust collection system both affect actual dedusting performance. Determine the parameters together with the rotary valve and dust collection equipment rather than selecting the deduster in isolation.
Beyond these five points, actual efficiency is affected by material residence time in the dedusting zone, air-flow distribution, the charge state of the fines and particle shape. Flake and regrind materials are harder to handle than spherical pellets: they have a larger specific surface, more edge burrs and stronger electrostatic adhesion, so the parameters for virgin pellets cannot be applied directly.
| Model | Capacity (t/h) | Dimensions (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| XD-20 | 20 | 400W × 700L × 900H |
| XD-30 | 30 | 400W × 700L × 1000H |
| XD-40 | 40 | 600W × 700L × 1000H |
| XD-50 | 50 | 600W × 900L × 1200H |
| XD-60 | 60 | 800W × 900L × 1200H |

The full range covers 10 kg/h to 150 t/h. Duties beyond the table, or requiring wear protection, polishing or wash-down design, can be customized. Detailed data: deduster selection table and pellet deduster dimensions.
The test record is clearer in table form:
| Item | Test record |
|---|---|
| Test date | 2026-04-07 |
| Material | Wanhua Chemical TPU thermoplastic polyurethane regrind |
| Incoming condition | Irregular flakes, high dust and chip content |
| Sample size | 25 kg |
| Test unit | RC1, capacity 150–350 kg/h |
| Condition after dedusting | Essentially free of fine dust and fine particles |
| Collected dust | About 10% of sample volume |
| Conclusion for 2 t/h configuration | XP45 selected; closed-loop system recommended because the material is hygroscopic |
Three points in this table are easy to misread and need to be stated clearly:
First, 10% is a volume share, not a mass fines content. Regrind has low bulk density and high voidage, and the dust is fluffy, so the same volume corresponds to far less mass than pellets. Converting 10% directly into "10% fines by mass" and then into ppm leads to completely wrong conclusions. Quotations and acceptance tests must use a mass basis (or an agreed test method) and state the sampling procedure.
Second, "invisible" after dedusting does not mean zero. The report states "essentially no fine dust or fine particles", which is a visual and tactile judgement. If the project has a hard target such as 15 ppm, sampling must still follow the agreed method; visual inspection cannot replace laboratory data.
Third, the hygroscopicity of TPU changes the system configuration. Ordinary pellets can be purged with open-loop positive-pressure air. With hygroscopic TPU regrind, ambient purge air would re-moisten the material in the dedusting section and affect downstream drying and forming. The report therefore recommends closed-loop operation. The conclusion is not that a deduster "must" be closed-loop; it is a system condition derived from the material.
Note: RC1 in the test report is the test-unit model; XP45 is the configuration selected for that project at 2 t/h; the XD series offered on this website is the product line. Final selection is subject to duty-specific calculation.
When both positions are used, the upstream unit performs coarse dedusting and the terminal unit performs fine dedusting; pressure loss and space must be calculated separately. Dedusters are commonly installed at the end of pneumatic conveying systems, ahead of silos or before packing. Maintenance access and inlet/outlet orientation must be confirmed at the layout stage. If the upstream system uses strand-phase conveying, the amount of dust generated at the source is already lower and the terminal deduster load is more stable — but the deduster cannot be omitted, because incoming fines and residue from product changeovers still need to be removed at the end.
| Item | Interval | Criterion / action |
|---|---|---|
| Air pressure and volume | Daily | If it deviates from the set point, check the air supply and pipework for leaks |
| Dedusting chamber and screen | Monthly | Dust build-up affects air distribution; adjust the cleaning interval to the material's fines content |
| Outlet fines content sampling | Quarterly | Compare with control-room records to decide whether air volume needs adjustment |
| Wear-part assessment | Every 6 months | Replace screens and seals according to wear and blockage condition |
Q1: What is the difference between a deduster and a dust collector?
A dust collector handles airborne dust in the conveying gas and is a gas–solid separation device; a deduster handles fine powder and angel hair adhering to the pellet surface and is a material cleaning device. They serve different targets and are normally used together.
Q2: Must the deduster be installed after the rotary valve?
It depends on the process objective. At the silo inlet it reduces dust inside the silo; before loading or bagging it directly controls the fines content of the finished product. When both positions are used, the upstream unit performs coarse dedusting and the terminal unit fine dedusting; pressure loss and space must be calculated separately.
Q3: What if the outlet fines content does not meet the target?
First check whether the air volume is stable and the residence time is sufficient; then consider changing from a single stage to multi-stage series operation. If the inlet fines content is significantly above the design value, adjusting air volume alone will not be enough.
Q4: Can nitrogen be used as the purge gas?
Yes. For inert-gas protection or cleanroom applications, state this at the ordering stage and the unit will be designed for closed-loop or inert-gas operation. Pressure stability and cleanliness of the gas supply must be confirmed during selection.
Q5: Does a large throughput fluctuation affect dedusting performance?
This series uses positive-pressure purge air with narrow-slot and perforated-plate structures and is designed to be insensitive to material flow fluctuation. Selection must still be based on peak throughput with margin, to avoid long-term operation above capacity.
Q6: How does dedusting TPU regrind differ from PP or PE pellets?
Regrind has an irregular shape, a larger specific surface and more burrs, so dust adheres more readily; TPU is also hygroscopic, so the air supply and system configuration must be considered together. We recommend an incoming-material test first, then selecting the model and whether closed-loop operation is required based on the measured result.
Deduster selection requires confirming throughput, material characteristics and site air-supply conditions item by item. Please contact us with your duty parameters:
